EXTERDER EF 1.4X II

EXTERDER EF 1.4X II
The Canon Extender EF 1.4x II is an easy and relatively affordable way to extend the reach (focal length) of compatible Canon L Series lenses with very little degradation in the final digital picture.

What does the 1.4 do? It multiplies the focal length setting of your lens by 1.4 - and decreases/narrows your lens' aperture setting by 1 stop. The aperture still opens to the same width, but the ratio of the aperture opening to the focal length is reduced - by 1 stop. This makes a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Lens or a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L Lens into a 98-280mm f4.0 IS (or f/5.6) lens. Or ... This makes a Canon EF 300mm f/4.0 L IS Lens into a 420mm f/5.6 IS lens! Do you need more macro from your Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L Lens? Add the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II to the setup for a high quality 252mm Macro lens! There is a very slight degredation in quality when using the 1.4x, but noticeably less than with the Canon Extender EF 2.0x II. Full Frame body users might notice some slight barrel distortion - especially on a Canon EF 600mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. Another negative aspect to shooting with the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II attached is the resulting reduction in focus speed. This can be an issue if you are shooting in low light and/or are using a lens that is not very fast on a camera such as a Canon 10d or a Canon 300D. Keep in mind that many non-pro Canon camera bodies need a minimum wide open aperture setting of f/5.6 for autofocus to work. The pro Canon camera bodies generally require f/8 for autofocus to work. I'm not saying that you cannot USE apertures narrower than f/5.6 or f/8.0 while using the Canon 1.4x, but the lens + extender (with its 1 stop aperture loss) must be able to open up to at least these apertures for autofocus to work. The lens and extender combo can always be used in manual focus mode. Some people are reporting that the pins on the extender can be covered with tape to trick the camera into autofocusing. I doubt Canon condones this - I have not tried this. Your results will be best when the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II is paired to an optically-excellent lens such as the Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens. My 1.4x converter practically lives on this lens. The Canon Extender EF 1.4x II is relatively small and light. It is weather-sealed when used with similarly-sealed lenses and camera bodies. Build quality is excellent - Canon L Lens quality.

Pictured above from left to right are the Canon Extender EF 1.4x Converter, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens, Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens. My advice is to use the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II to extend the usefulness of a lens that has another more primary purpose. Another good use for the 1.4x is to create a longer focal length than is available natively. This where my 500mm + 1.4x usage comes into play - the only Canon lens longer than 600mm is the 1200mm that costs about $80,000. Said another way, you generally will get better results from a 400mm lens than with a 300mm lens + the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II. The native lens is less trouble to mount and dismount as well. The Canon Extender EF 1.4x II - extending the reach of your compatible lenses for a low cost.
